Jonathan Berryman
Lift Every Voice!
4:30 PM, Sunday, February 24, 2008, Woolsey Hall
The New Haven Chorale welcomes The Heritage Chorale under the direction of Jonathan Berryman, guest actors and readers , and tenor soloist Albert Lee (1994 Student Singer) for a musical and literary celebration of Black History Month. Poetry, dramatic readings, and striking concert music by African American poets, authors, and composers will weave a tapestry of African American contributions to the literary and musical arts in America. Musical selections will include moving spirituals by Hogan and Burleigh, lively gospel numbers, and music by Billings, Margaret Bonds, and Hailstork.
 |
Albert Lee, a 1993-1994 New Haven Chorale Student Singer, continued on to Julliard and is now
a substantial musical force in his own right with gospel, lieder, oratorios, and
opera. During the 2005-2007 seasons he appeared as artist-in-residence at The Palm
Beach Opera--and has also sung with The Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, Opera Theater
of St. Louis, Opera Providence, Kentucky Opera, Connecticut Center Opera, and the
Berkshire Opera Company--in title roles from Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute to
Goro in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and Alfredo in Verdi’s |
La Traviata. He has also appeared with the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh, the St. Luke’s Chamber
Orchestra, New York’s Collegiate Chorale, the Pro Arts Symphony, and the Missouri Symphony,
as well as touring internationally with The American Spiritual Ensemble and performing at the
Aspen Festival and Europe’s Caramoor Festival. A versatile and award-winning performer,
Mr. Lee is acclaimed as a rising star who “sings with great style and musicality” and
delivers “musically distinctive,” “vocally sumptuous,” and “acrobatically agile” performances.
Mr. Lee last appeared as tenor soloist with The New Haven Chorale several years ago in their
unforgettable “Songs of the Journey” concert with The Heritage Chorale, where he electrified
a full-house audience in Woolsey Hall. Please join
us in welcoming Mr. Lee back to our stage in New Haven! |
